Understanding machine learning and artificial intelligence

Adriano Meirinho · Marketing e Gestão Postos à Prova (2018) · 2 min read

It sounds like science fiction, but the idea of robots working to carry out our tasks more efficiently is already a reality in companies. Of course, they won’t be the same robots or the same tasks as in the movies. Artificial intelligence works like this: through algorithms, systems are built into machines programmed to perform functions intelligently, that is, gathering past data and combining it with current data to make the best decisions for each action. This reduces process errors, saves raw materials, and frees up time for more important tasks. According to Gartner forecasts, by 2020 AI will be as important to business as websites or mobile apps are today. Will artificial intelligence take your job? Maybe, but new job opportunities will be created for data scientists. If your job is filling in spreadsheets, organizing documents, and compiling data, it is likely to disappear. If there is no strategic thinking behind it, it is likely to disappear. If the company you work for isn’t smart enough to use your potential for bigger goals, it will become a stagnant company. This has been the biggest fear surrounding machine learning. Repetitive process-based jobs that employ so many people around the world may indeed be reduced. As mentioned earlier, the hope is that these positions will be replaced by more strategic roles, and that the world will move toward forms of work that are more developed in terms of creativity and innovation, thinking less like managers and more like agents of transformation. Who goes beyond processes? Perhaps the main and most important impact of artificial intelligence on companies will be revealing who really goes beyond processes. When machines are doing all the process work in similar ways, you can only stand out through better creative, strategic, and innovative work. Who will be doing this work? Who will know how to harness human potential to devise new frameworks of strategic thinking for each action? How can this ease of connection be used to create collaborative networks? These are the companies that will build the future of work with AI.
