Innovation only happens in a mess

Adriano Meirinho · Marketing e Gestão Postos à Prova (2018) · 2 min read

There is no denying that content and creativity have been democratized. Access to them has become much easier, turning absolutely anyone into a creator instead of just a spectator of new technologies. But with so many possibilities, is reality really reflected in a creative and innovative way? The big challenge lies in making better content for better platforms, in making it easier to find and share that content, and in making money from it more effectively. The idea that everyone has stopped being a spectator and become a creator is misleading, because what gets produced in large quantities is mostly copies of what has already been consumed. A boy who has watched YouTube videos all his life and now starts making his own videos will probably be reproducing content that already exists, in formats that already exist, based on what he has seen. Few people give rise to new, transformative formats that lead somewhere new. Chances are good that someone who has had little contact with technology has better contributions to make. People looking in from the outside usually see the whole picture more clearly and can suggest what is not yet part of it. Nothing is created, nothing is lost, everything is transformed. The same laws of nature apply to what we see every day with new devices and media. One does not replace the other (TV did not replace newspapers); it only opens the way for what already exists to be transformed. And these transformations only happen in a mess, amid chaos.

Innovation only happens in a mess

Above all: when they do happen, they are noticed quickly.

What is truly innovative is what takes big risks, what is driven by compelling arguments, what irritates a lot of people, causes pain, and may very well be misunderstood. Innovation usually comes from people who couldn’t care less whether they get fired for it. Change comes from the ideas of people seen as odd, who take risks because they truly believe in what they do. Innovating is about having good arguments, sound and compelling ones.

Marketing e Gestão Postos à Prova

It is about making people uncomfortable, going against policies, causing great pain with the purest intentions. About being misunderstood, about being irritating, about offering and giving yourself before expecting any gain.
